Tha Cutthroat Committee — Turf Buccaneers
I had a great time with last weeks review and really wanted to stay in the genre with something from the West. Here is Tha Cutthroat Committee’s first album together, “Turf Buccaneers”, hosted by Mac Dre.
Tha Cutthroat Committee is made up of Dubee aka Sugawolf, Mac Dre, and P.S.D., all of whom coming from the Vallejo, CA. This album was released February 21, 2001. This being the first album released on Thizz Entertainment, this was a very big shift in the momentum of each of these artists and the Bay Area sound as a whole.
The cover for this album is very dope the for the time it was released. Designed by Cesar Puentes, this album features that classic early Photoshop look that was super popular in the late 90s and early 2000s. Other than the cover, there really isn’t too much else to work with in regards to visual design elements. I do really enjoy the fonts used on the cover tho.
Track #1 on the album is titled “Intro”, and it is really just a solid introduction to the guys in the group. Quick lil verses by each of them. Love hearing this track, all of them bouncing verses off of each others. This first track really shows the listeners that they are about to hear some fly shit from a group that really works well with together. Whole lotta lingo going crazy here too.
The last song on the album is “Plain To See”. This song features a beat produced by Mac Dre that features a really cool little sample that almost has a spooky sound to it. The whole song almost has this ominous sorta vibe about it. Finishing the album with a song that everyone just really goes crazy on is such a great way to end it. This just makes you want to hear more. Builds hype for the next albums and what moves Dre and Thizz Ent as a whole will be making in the future.
I really enjoy this album. I’ve heard a lot of these songs before. But I couldn’t tell you the last time that I just sat down and A-Z’d the album. It is full of great tracks from a point in Bay Area history when we were really peaking up. I never realized that this was the first album released on Thizz Entertainment. I think it’s a great entrance of one of the most revolutionary Rap pioneering entities.
There really isn’t a lot of bad things to be said about an album like this. After all of the points have been put together, we ranked this album with a score of: 7.9
