Skip-Through Reviews 9/25/26
Mannnn! What a weekend it’s been. I’ve been going back and forth about whether I do these reviews and then include them in the mix or not. Then I realized, that I have to. Last Wednesday of the month is coming up. These albums are out. Gotta include them.
I’ve also lowkey been lazy, so I had to lock in and really make this happen haha. Still fighting to hold myself to a schedule and make sure these posts get done.
This weekend I really didn’t find anything super exciting. I spent a lot of time at the bottom of the recommended list again, and found a few interesting projects. But ultimately, I really don’t think I found anything super revolutionary this weekend.
REGARDLESS! I hope that y’all peep the reviews and enjoy the list. If there are any songs that I missed, don’t hesitate to tap in and I will make time to check them out!
Trae tha Truth, Mozzy — Still Tapped In
Cover art here is just a simple photo of the two of them. Maybe on a video set or something.
I’ve never really listened to Trae, his voice is almost kinda like a Scarface or something. Low, southern type sound.
This album is fine. It really isn’t my style tho. I enjoy the hood poetry vibes of it all, but the difference in the vocal sounds is too wild for me. Mozzy and Trae sound like they record things totally different from each other and it just doesn’t sound great to me.
5.5/10
Marnz Malone — I Wish I Could Sing
Coo lil painting for the album cover. I’m not sure if it’s digital or not. Nothing too wild.
I think that Marnz sounds dope! Lyrically he is pretty slick, but the beats just sound super quiet and uninteresting. I really like “Safiyah Interlude”.
Fine project. Just not super interesting overall.
5.5/10
Tinashe — Popstar
Coo lil photo of Tinashe for the cover. Her eyes are all stared up. Maybe contacts or something.
“Too Easy” has a suuuper funky instrumental. I am with it. I am really loving this really heavy Pop/Dance crossover she is going for with this album. “Empty Stadium” is a great example of what I’m talking about. After the song “Overdramatic”, the album seems to lean more into an R&B type vibe. OOOooo, I really like “Twentyfive Eight”, love the weird instrumental and the fun vocal bits.
Fun album, I feel like the girlies will love this one.
7/10
Joy Oladokun — Hope Is A Heavy Thing
Cool, simple text cover. I really love the font work they did here.
There is almost a Country undertone to the sound of these songs. I’m not mad about it. “Kind” is a really nice song. I really enjoy the pacing and the vulnerability of Joy’s approach here. This whole album is a collection of really nice songs. Lovely sound of her voice. Some of them pick up to this Rock vibe, but mostly, it’s very soft and Folky.
6/10
Leon Bridges — Happiness Anytime
Very cool looking cover here. Dope photo and text work. Lovely colors too.
Mannn, I’ve always really loved Leon’s voice and the music he makes. He really popped out and brought back some sounds that may have been lost. All of the music he makes really sounds super authentic to him too. “Your Love Is Electric” is a vibeeee! You can’t deny this. Same with “Fly Baby”, these songs are all so fly. I need an entire love album from this guy. ASAP. Thank you. The last 4 songs are all HEAT. Easy. I’ll be running this album back. Great shit.
8/10
FKA MASH — EXITECHNO
Simple moody photo for the cover. I like the cool tone of the red color in the title text/logo.
This album is fine, the music is okay, but it starts to feel mildly repetitive, so I kinda kept getting lost listening to it. Would be nice to throw on while studying or something.
5.5/10
Ava Ro — stranger on tv
I like the framing of the empty TV in this image. It is a dope shot.
The music on this album seems sorta quiet, but it’s nice. Nothing insane. “I Hate You But You’re Mine” is a wild song. Seems sorta toxic. Idk haha
The songs on this album are fine. I could see people enjoying this.
6/10
BLNDE — BLNDE FOR PRESIDENT
I’LL BE WRITING THIS REVIEW IN ALL CAPS. IDK WHY PEOPLE THINK IT’S COOLER TO WRITE THIS WAY. I AM EXHAUSTED OF THE CAPS.
I DO REALLY LIKE THIS COVER. IT IS A LOVELY PHOTO AND I REALLY ENJOY THE SCRIBBLED TEXT LOOK.
FIRST SONG IS A COO INTRO TO THE ALBUM. IT IS UNFORTUNATLY FOLLOWED BY “CHAUFFEUR” WHICH I FIND TO BE SORTA BORING. WHICH IS ALSO A PRETTY GOOD INDICATOR FOR THE REST OF THE ALBUM, WHICH IS ALSO BORING.
5/10
Camidoh — Amina - EP
Normally, I try and avoid any projects that have 4 or less songs. I think they are pointless, but I am feeling curious.
The cover for this album looks like they are laying in a giant purple field or something.
The title track “Amina” is fine, has a little vibe to it. I really love the brass sound on “Ride Solo”, but I don’t necessarily like the lyrics of the song so that’s a bummer haha.
6/10
Matroda — HARD TO EXPLAIN - EP
Oooo, I really like this cover. Very dope Xerox type vibe. Bold red.
I really like this type of Dance music. Some lyrics really go a long way for me. Something to sing along to, not just a repeating beat.
Out of these 4 songs, I really think that “THINGS YOU SAY” is the best song. Good vibes.
6.5/10
Towa Tei — ZAMBIENT
I really love this cover. And I looooove the title “Zambient” very cool.
Yeah, this is the kind of electronic music that I really enjoy. This vocal sample electronic chaos. So fun. So interesting. Very tasteful. “THE SOURCE” is a super funky track. I love the different levels of energy it has throughout. All of the songs on this album are very interesting. Something you can play and stare at the stars to. Idk. Some future shit.
6.5/10
Megiapa — Intentions
Interesting cover. Nothing wild. Just a couple photos overlayed or something.
On all of the songs in this album, there is this weird harsh feeling to the vocals and instrumentals. Idk what it is, but I feel like it takes away from the potentially peaceful R&B vibe I think they were going for here.
5.5/10
Young Jonn — Dear London
I really like this cover. It is almost looking like a letter or something. Love the hand written script for the title and artist name too. Very dope.
The first handful of songs are fine, there is a certain level of energy that I was missing from the music. I really enjoy “Hold Somebody” tho, this song has what I like in the Afrobeats genre.
6/10
Tee Grizzley — They Forgot
Simple cover art for this project, coo lil photo and a simple script for the album title.
“Back Ina Yams” is a bangerrrr! Tee Grizzley has to have one of the best deliveries in rap. Whatever this guy says, it just sounds dope. I also love the pace of his raps. The beat on “Orphan” is super dope, I love the little stutter that it has.
The enetirety of this album is super fun. There are a few lowkey songs that I don’t really care for, but mostly Tee really has that exciting pace about his raps throughout.
7/10
Big Moochie Grape & Zaytoven — GRAPETOVEN
Very purple cover. Maybe on set for a music video or something. Looks pretty coo tho.
The music on this album is good. It isn’t too different from each other, but I could listen to this though. I do like the song “She Love Me”. A classic southern sound that really hits at all times. It can just be a little repetitive some times haha.
6.5/10
DDG — HIT-A-THON
I really like this cover. It has a great energy about it. The lil green glow is a very spacey touch that I enjoy.
I’ve never really listened to DDG, I obviously am aware of who he is, but I am excited to see what his music is about.
Is DDG the rapper and producer, or is he just rapping? Idk. Regardless… Any song with SOB X RBE is gonna bang. “BAY 2 DA YAK” feat. SOB X RBE is a BANGGERRRR. “ROUND & ROUND” is also a big hit. I think it sounds like everyone on each song is having a great time. It unfortunately sorta sounds like DDG can’t make a hit without a feature. And that’s fine. As long as his hype can bring in the right people.
