Skip-Through Reviews 9/4/26
We got a very simple week of reviews this time around. Partially, I was tired and lowkey, and partially it just didn’t seem like that interesting of a week in music.
BUT… I got some done. Found some gems. And am here to share my lil thoughts.
I was able to find a few really interesting albums. It is always cool to see the variety of visual art and how different people play with the sounds of a variety of music genres. These reviews are meant to be these little looks at a bunch of new tunes and letting y’all know my first impressions. I love the week following these reviews, because I listen through a playlist of my favorite track from each week. This is how I come up with what songs to play at the end of the month for our Recap Mix.
As always, if you have any ideas about something that might make these better for you, or if there was any album that I missed that you wanted covered, don’t hesitate to hit me up!
Thank you, as always, for checking out the blog! Enjoy my lil thoughts.
03 Greedo — Last Night Out
Warm glowy photo of what looks like the outside view of Greedo in his house chillin. Not bad really. Fits his usual lowkey vibe.
Sounds like Greedo really is coming back into his classic whiney tones and west coast trap instrumentals. I always have loved the sound of this guys voice and the way he extends his vocals into this dope melodic vibe. “If I, Pt. 3” feat. Ty Dolla $ign is a great way to start this album off. I really fuck with the sound on “Fill The Void”, I wish this was a whole song. Like if the instrumental had come out and jumped it woulda been insane.
Fun lil tape. Nothing game changing.
6.5/10
KARRAHBOOO — NOT DA 2
Love a “I found this old photo” type cover art haha.
Karra starts off strong with “INSIDE THE BOOTH”, hard hitting beat, quick lil lines n shit. Fly start to the album for sure.
The instrumental on “WYO” feat Monaleo is insaneeeee! Really fucking with the pace on this song. I think that Karra really shines when she has some support on a track. It sounds that in some moments she struggles with creating fully composed tracks, and a feature usually brings that for her.
This album was a solid example of what Karrahbooo is capable of.
7/10
Nemzzz — LOCKED IN
Coo lil long exposure image for the cover. Nothing too crazy. Doesn’t really correlate to the album haha
First few songs of the album are fine, nothing too stand out-ish, but that’s really what I hear most of the time with the rap albums. Sometimes I really think that it falls onto the beat selection of most of the albums. If we chose better sounding instrumentals, we would pop off. The song “EXPANSION” is solid. I enjoy the beat, the lyrics are hittin, over all solid track. “KILLIN EM” is a dopeee track. I love the bounce.
6.5/10
Lul Rell — Youngest In Charge
I can already tell you based on this album, it is gonna be aggressive.
It is. Starts off aggressive as hell. Good lordt. “LOL” is a banguh. I love the way they just start spittin, and then the beat just meets up with them.
Man, idk what it is about this Sac-ish inland Cali sound that I love, but man does this sound bumppp. Cheat code frfr. “REDRUM” is a banger. Do they sample Hopsin on “Activated”?? Madness haha.
7/10
Grace Mitchell — Daughter of the King
This deff counts as a black and white photo for the cover. Very valid.
I really love the sound of this album as a whole. I think it is a great A-Z listening album. “I’M HIGH” is one of my favorite tracks. The songs all have this echoey muffeled sound that I love. Great album to check out.
7.5/10
Kweku Smoke — NO DAYS OFF
Some championship shit for the cover. I love the look and energy the cover gives off.
This guy is from Ghana, so I’m not sure what language he is speaking here. This is gonna be a review rated strictly off vibes haha. It’s interesting that even though his lyrics are all in another language, yet the titles of the songs are in English mostly.
A lot of the songs sound pretty quiet, so that’s a bummer. Feels like it lowers the energy of the album. None of the songs really hit for me. The beats just feel low energy for the most part.
5/10
My Ugly Clementine — Apply Autonomy
YO! What a FUCKING COVER. I love it. Dopest cover I’ve seen in a long time tbh. I am super excited for this album. Based on the art along, I can only expect that a lot of love has been put into this album.
“This Is Nice” is such a fun song. Sounds lovely vocally, and I can’t get the “Don’t break another, don’t break another” out of my head. “The Pretender” is a BANGER.
Yeah, I could call out each banger here, but y’all should just peep the album. A-Z very good album.
9/10
Venbee — back to the drawing board - EP
Super fun looking cover, I really love the colors of the image and the staging.
Ooooo! Some really lovely spoken word over a very cool electronic instrumental. “Not my day” accounts a pretty shitty sounding day in such a fun way haha.
Wait, I really love this spoken word over techy instrumentals. Such a fun vibe. “Intrusive thoughts” is a wildly fun song as well haha
Love that they ended the tape with a lovely acoustic joint. Lovely. Tasteful.
Such a dope EP, I will easily be checking out some more music by venbee for sure!
8.5/10
Tinie Tempah — 12AM - EP
I like how sketchy this cover is. Over an image of some club photo or something.
The sounds of these percussions are amazing. I have been really struggling to find some Dance style music with these full bodied sounds. I feel like sometimes the digital sounding instrumentation just takes away from the life of the tape.
Each song on this tape is super fun. Really enjoyed this one.
7.5/10
The Magnolia — Who Are You
A very classic looking cover. Band in the studio. Big, bold text. No questions about what’s going on here.
This is some very bluesy rock, idk about R&B… MAYBE some Soul. Almost giving Elvis vibes here. Super interesting. I fuck with it. “Step Out” and “Loser” both showing some lovely slower examples of this very classic sound.
Every song on this album feels classic. I think The Magnolia really did a great jog with capturing that sound and feel.
8/10
Second Major — MOON - EP
Very gnarly looking cover, it looks like this band really likes using still life photography for their covers, I wonder if there is any visual meaning behind their object and color choices.
Why would you release a single for an EP? What is an EP anyways? Let’s find out…
It means, more songs than a single, less than an album…. So wtf. Haha
Just release a bunch of singles or take the time to make an album. I don’t really get that.
5.5/10
Saviourself — HARD LAUNCH - EP
(Another EP, how exciting…)
The cover is sick as hell. Cool lil mock up of a Gameboy cartridge.
This guy is SCREAMING. Okay, let’s see.
Yoo, the breakdown on “ragebait” is wilddd. I fuck with it. And yo, “CRSHR” is an wildly passionate track.
Tape should deff be labeled at Metal instead of just Rock, but what everrrr..
6.5/10
Krewella — PEAK
What a lovely cover. It’s giving “whimsy-tech”.
And it’s sounding it as well.. I’m interested…
Each song sounds fine. I love the singing parts, but then the techno parts just kinda come in out of nowhere. I wish that the vocals and the instrumentals could come together more smoothly and evenly.
5.5/10
Ivoris — Pour My Heart Out
Super cute cover. Lil oyster with a pearl. Super fun to set up, I’m sure.
“Make U Blush” is a super cute song. The lead singer seems to have that soft lil singing voice that the girlies will love I’m sure. I really like the song “Monet”, super cute lil love song. I feel like this whole album is “lil” and “cute” fr.
6.5/10
Children of Zeus — As The World Burns…
I really love the art work that they have for this cover. Super sick. Bold blocks of color and always an eery look to it.
I really love the slow R&B/Soul vibe the instrumentals are and how smoothly the singer and rapper both slide over the beats. Makes for such a peaceful and relaxing sound. “Weed & Rum” just sounds like a song about a perfect day really of a guy and his girl. There is a mild 112 vibe coming from their sound. I just really wish that there was more life to the instrumentals. There is a lot of moments where they just feel flat and not fully rounded like I would want with this style of music.
6/10
Private School — LIKE THE RENTS DUE
Amazing black and white photo of a guy who looks like he is absolutely LOSING it. Love it. I really like this sound. Sorta punk, sorta rap. I’m with it. Whole tape it coo, nothing insane. The sound is like some Limp Bizkit type shit. I like the song “BACK OUTSIDE”, but beyond that, I am excited to hear more from these guys in the future.
6.5/10
Dono — Growing Pains
Very lovely image of her in the tub. Looking very relaxed. Love the cool tones, that aren’t super over done. Lovely soft texture of the scene.
Love the softer R&B energy on this album. I was really enjoying “Sandy Springs”, until the feature Bally Baby started rapping haha.
Over all, it’s a nice R&B album. Nothing truly insane or revolutionary.
